I am Martin Castro and I am a Chamorro shell carver from the island of Saipan in the Northern Mariana Islands. I have been carving since 2001. I specialize in making pendants from the trochus shell ("aliling" in Chamorro), but I also create carvings from bone, stone, giant clam, black oyster, abalone, and horns.
My designs are inspired by my Chamorro culture, the beauty found on land and in the sea, and what the material I'm working with unveils to me.
